Introduction

TickStream can be installed as a Hyper-V or VMWare virtual machine. Intensity Analytics provides a simple extracting VHD or OVA file to speed up the installation of Windows 2012 Evaluation Edition, as well as an installation of SQL Server 2012 SP3 Express.

VMWare ESX

Please note that the image is only supported on ESXi 5.0 Update 1 and above. You may need to install a patch if running Update 1, see article - http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2006859

  1. Using the vSphere Client, create a new virtual machine by importing the downloaded .OVA image.
  2. Start the virtual machine and connect to VMWare console. Complete the windows installation by accepting the EULA and assigning an administrator password.
  3. From the VMWare console, install the VMWare tools and reboot when prompted.

VirtualBox

Please use the latest version of VirtualBox available at http://www.virtualbox.org

  1. From the File menu, Import Appliance.
  2. Browse for the TickStream .OVA file and select expert mode
  3. Change the machine type to Windows 2012
  4. Click the import button.
  5. Start the virtual machine and connect to Hyper-V console. Complete the windows installation by accepting the EULA and assigning an administrator password.
  6. You may be prompted to reboot the virtual machine.

Microsoft Hyper-V

Please note that the image is only supported on Hyper-V / Windows 2008 R2 and later. You may need to install a patch if running Windows 2008 R2 - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2744129

  1. Using the Hyper-V Client, create a new virtual machine with the following settings:
    • 2 vCPUs minimum, 4 vCPUs recommended
    • 4096 MB RAM minimum, 8096 MB RAM recommended
    • Add 1 virtual network card
    • Do not attach any disks
  2. Place the extracted .VHD image files in a folder of your choosing.
  3. Edit the properties of the recently created virtual machine and assign the image file to IDE controller 0.
  4. Start the virtual machine and connect to Hyper-V console. Complete the windows installation by accepting the EULA and assigning an administrator password.
  5. You may be prompted to reboot the virtual machine.

Configure the image

  1. Login to the virtual machine as administrator.
  2. Assign a static IP address, gateway and DNS servers to the network adapter. Verify network connectivity.
  3. Rename the computer and join to a Windows domain if desired.
  4. Set the date, time and time zone.
  5. Download the TickStream Express Zip file and extract it to the administrator's desktop.
  6. Run the sqlinstall.bat batch file to silently install Microsoft SQL Express 2012 SP3
    • The local administrator and local administrators group will be granted SQL administrator privileges
    • The server will be configured as the default instance
    • TCP/IP networking will be enabled
    • SQL Authentication mode will be enabled
    • All SQL Express features will be installed
  7. Provide a SQL Server SA password when prompted using letters and numbers

Extend Windows Evaluation

When the initial 60-day evaluation period nears its end, you can run the Slmgr.vbs script to reset the evaluation period. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, and then click Command Prompt.
  2. Type slmgr.vbs -dli, and then press ENTER to check the current status of your evaluation period.
  3. To reset the evaluation period, type slmgr.vbs –rearm, and then press ENTER.
  4. Restart the computer.

Apply Windows License

Follow these steps to upgrade the trial installation of Windows Server to a licensed copy.

  1. Launch the Start Menu and type in command prompt or cmd so that it shows up on your start menu search list. Right click on the Command Prompt shortcut and select “Run as Administrator”.
  2. At the administrator command prompt, type in: slmgr.vbs -ipk <insert your product key here>
  3. To activate windows after changing the key, run: slmgr.vbs -ato
  4. Alternatively, if you want to use a graphical interface, run the following command at a command prompt: slui.exe 3

Expanding the VM

The virtual machine contains a single 40GB C:\ disk. You may need to expand the disk using the appropriate methods for either Hyper-V or VMWare, and then extend the file system using the windows disk management tools. You may also relocate the SQL databases to another volume.
